How is a retractable awning supported if there are no poles?

Durasol retractable awnings are self supported. Spring-loaded arms and large radius elbows keep the fabric taut by applying outward force.

How is an awning mounted to my home?

Window Works’ professional awning installers locate the structural framework and pre-drill installation bracket holes through any siding, attaching the awning directly to either wall studs or headers. Then they pre-drill to avoid cracking and add silicone caulk to the hardware and brackets for leak prevention. All mounting applications use heavy-duty 3/8" lag bolts.

What happens to my retractable awning in the winter?

Retractable awnings are self-storing when retracted. When you select a Durasol Sun Shelter Elite with a hood, you may remove the valance during the winter. When you select a Durasol Carina or a Durasol Bella the entire awning will roll into a self closing sealed unit, giving unsurpassed protection from the elements. At Window Works we can advise you on the best awning for your needs.

Can I leave my awning extended in the wind?

As a rule of thumb, if you are comfortable sitting outdoors dining or reading the paper, it is probably safe to extend your awning.

Are there any other weather conditions I should be concerned about?

Durasol retractable awnings such as the Bella, the Carina, the Sun Shelter Regal and the Sun Shelter Elite are primarily designed to protect you from the sun with limited use in light rains, provided strong winds are not present. These awnings should always be retracted in strong winds. However, Window Works offers a variety of other Durasol retractable awnings such as the Gennuis and the Gallery which are designed to withstand rain and harsher wind conditions while still giving the flexibility of a retractable awning. Previous to the launch of these new products it was necessary to select a stationary pipe frame awning for rain protection. The introduction of these exclusive Durasol products expands your choices for sun, shade and rain protection.

How long will the fabrics last?

Durasol’s lightweight, acrylic fabrics are protected against rot, mildew, and excessive fading. Their life expectancy, when cleaning and care instructions are followed, is ten to twelve years.

How do I clean my awning?

Durasol awnings made using acrylic fabrics such as Sunbrella, Para, American Heritage and Sattler should be cleaned regularly before dirt, bird droppings, etc. are allowed to accumulate and become embedded into the fabric. The fabric can be cleaned without removing it from the frame. Begin by brushing off any loose soil and then hose off with water. If necessary you can use a non-detergent soap such as Ivory or Dreft. Always rinse thoroughly to remove soap and do not subject the fabric to excessive heat. For stubborn stains, or when simply you want your awning to look brand new again, call Window Works. We provide professional removal, cleaning and reinstallation of your awnings.

Do I need a protective hood for my retractable awning?

When structural protection is not available, an optional hood protects your awning. Window Works recommends a protective hood when awnings are roof mounted, fascia mounted, or not located directly under a soffit or overhang. Or, you can select a fully sealed cassette unit such as the Durasol Carina, the Durasol Bella.

Can I still have a retractable awning if I have a limited amount of space under the soffit or overhang of my home?

Our roof mounting system is an effective solution for installations with less than 8 ft. from the deck surface to the mounting location. Brackets are anchored into the roof rafter and sealed to prevent leaking. Water, wind, and snow pass safely under the awning. With the purchase of a protective hood, you are set. In many ways, this is actually a preferable method of installation. Over 30 percent of our installations are done this way.

Another option is to select a Durasol Pinnacle awning. The Pinnacle can be mounted at a completely flat pitch, using Guide rails and posts.

What is the average cost of a Durasol retractable awning?

A typical custom-made unit, motorized, professionally installed retractable awning from the Durasol Sun Shelter Series averages between $3,000 and $5,000. The Durasol Pinnacle averages between $4000.00 and $8000.00. The premium retractable awnings such as the Gennius the Gallery usually start around $9900.00.
